A romantic comedy set against the backdrop of the Seattle grunge scene in the late '80s and early '90s, Singles contains music and/or cameo appearances by the music groups who defined the movement, including Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Mother Love Bone, and others. The plot is a series of interconnected stories about various Seattle singles, some of whom are part of a couple, at least temporarily.
In the film, Matt Dillon plays a longhaired rocker whose girlfriend, played by Bridget Fonda, is considering breast enlargement surgery. Campbell Scott and Kyra Sedgwick star as Steve and Linda, a couple going through the awkward stages of a relationship, where quirky little traits that may have seemed attractive initially can evolve into major annoyances.
Singles is a funny, sweet, and enjoyable picture that captures the flavor of the Northwest, where writer-director Cameron Crowe relocated after marrying Seattle native Nancy Wilson of Heart. The Wilson sisters also appear on the soundtrack as members of The Lovemongers.
Ten years before the release of Singles in 1992, Crowe was the "boy wonder" reporter for Rolling Stone magazine who went back to high school in order to research and write what became Fast Times at Ridgemont High. His other work includes Jerry Maguire (1996) and Say Anything (1989).
The film has been described as an "exuberant romantic comedy" by Rolling Stone. It features two outake scenes as a bonus. Singles was released in 1992 and is a snapshot of the Seattle grunge scene, with its music and characters that defined the era.
